Effects of crustal ohmic dissipation and alignment

چکیده
We investigate the evolution of pulsars in the (P, Ṗ ) diagram. We first present analytical formulae to follow the evolution of a pulsar using simple exponential models for magnetic field decay and alignment. We then compare these evolutionary tracks with detailed model calculations using ohmic decay of crustal neutron star magnetic fields. We find that, after an initial phase with a small braking index, n, pulsars evolve with enhanced torque decay (n ≫ 3) for a short interval of time (0.1− 1 Myr) before returning to a long term n ≈ 3 evolution. Hence, we expect the true age of relatively old pulsars to be approximately equal to their observed characteristic age, τ = P/(2Ṗ ). It is not possible from data to constrain model parameters of the neutron star crust.

Magnetic field dissipation in neutron star crusts: from magnetars to isolated neutron stars
Context. We study the non–linear evolution of magnetic fields in neutron star crusts with special attention to the influence of the Hall drift. Aims. Our goal is to understand the conditions for fast dissipation due to the Hall term in the induction equation. We study the interplay of Ohmic dissipation and Hall drift in order to find a timescale for the overall crustal field decay. Methods. We ...
متن کاملSlip Effects on Ohmic Dissipative Non-Newtonian Fluid Flow in the Presence of Aligned Magnetic Field
The present paper deals with the effects of Ohmic dissipative Casson fluid flow over a stretching sheet in the presence of aligned magnetic field. The present phenomenon also includes the interaction of thermal radiation and velocity slip. The governing boundary layer equations are transformed into a set of ordinary differential equations using the similarity transformations. The dimensionless ...

A general condition for sharp transition of decay rate from quantum to thermal regimes is derived in dissipative tunneling models when positiondependent mass is involved. It is shown that the effect of dissipation in general changes the order of the phase transition. Especially, for the models with constant mass the Ohmic dissipation enlarges the range of parameters for first order phase transi...
متن کاملEnergy Fluxes and Ohmic Dissipation in the Earth’s Core
Simulations have shown that convection-driven geodynamo models can produce reversing magnetic fields of a similar strength to those of the geomagnetic field. These simulations suggest that the ohmic dissipation arising from the geodynamo is not due solely to the largest scale harmonics of the magnetic field, but is dominated by contributions from smaller scale components. It is argued that, in ...
متن کاملMagnetic Field Decay in Isolated Neutron Stars
We investigate three mechanisms that promote the loss of magnetic flux from an isolated neutron star. Ohmic decay produces a diffusion of the magnetic field with respect to the charged particles. It proceeds at a rate that is inversely proportional to the electric conductivity and independent of the magnetic field strength. Ohmic decay occurs in both the fluid core and solid crust of a neutron ...
